Sinds ik in 1995 begon te surfen, maakt wax altijd al deel uit van mijn bodyboarduitrusting. Het is een van die accessoires die veel mensen als iets eenvoudigs zien, maar dat in werkelijkheid een grote invloed heeft op het gevoel dat we op het board hebben, op onze controle en uiteindelijk op onze manier van surfen.

Zoals veel jonge riders keek ik naar alles wat de professionals deden. Ik wilde dezelfde vinnen, dezelfde boards en natuurlijk dezelfde wax. Er was iets bijzonders aan het gebruik van precies hetzelfde materiaal als de riders die ik bewonderde. Mijn moeder moest zelfs verschillende winkels aflopen om het specifieke merk te vinden waar ik naar op zoek was. Nu kijk ik daar met een glimlach op terug, maar op dat moment was het iets heel belangrijks voor me.
Wax was niet alleen een hulpmiddel om de grip te verbeteren. Het maakte deel uit van een ritueel. Het aanbrengen ervan voordat ik het water inging, liet me me beter voorbereid voelen en dichter bij het niveau komen dat ik ooit hoopte te bereiken.
