For women’s wetsuits, thickness matters more than any other feature: it’s what determines whether the suit insulates well in cold water and how long you can stay in the water without losing comfort. The first question I ask when helping to choose a wetsuit is what the usual water temperature is where you surf. That piece of information shapes the entire decision.
Key criteria for choosing your women’s wetsuit
To choose the right wetsuit, look at three specific aspects: thickness in millimetres, zipper type, and women’s specific sizing. In mild water, a 3/2 mm short-sleeve wetsuit is enough; in cold winter water, you’ll need a 4/3 mm with long sleeves. The difference in price is moderate, but the comfort in the water is completely different.
Wetsuit thicknesses: how to choose by temperature
Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimetres and defines the whole experience. A 3/2 mm wetsuit covers most of the year in temperate Atlantic waters (above 19 °C); a 4/3 mm comes into play when the water drops below 18–19 °C and thermal protection is essential for winter. Above 20–21 °C, a 2 mm short-sleeve wetsuit is enough and adds comfort in movement.
What really makes the difference here is not only the retained warmth, but also the freedom of movement in the shoulders.
Zipper types: front vs back
The zipper is where everyday comfort is decided. A back zip makes it easier to get in and out; a front zip is more awkward to put on, but insulates better because the closure is placed where there is less movement. For women, many surfers prefer the front zip because the fit on the back can sometimes rub or press uncomfortably. At Mundo-Surf we offer both options so you can choose according to your priority: quick entry or maximum insulation.
Size guide for women’s wetsuits
Women’s wetsuit sizes don’t correspond to conventional clothing. To find the right fit, measure your height and build: extra small is for women under 1.60 m; small, between 1.60 and 1.70 m; medium, between 1.70 and 1.80 m. A suit that is too loose lets water in constantly; one that is too tight restricts movement and tires you out faster. At Mundo-Surf our position is that you should be able to fit one finger between the wetsuit and your skin, but no more.
Women’s wetsuits for different water conditions
In warm summer water (over 20–21 °C), a 2 mm short-sleeve wetsuit is enough and adds comfort; in spring and autumn (19–20 °C), a 3/2 mm is the standard; in winter or cold Atlantic waters (below 19 °C), a 4/3 mm with long sleeves becomes a necessity. Some winter suits also include a hood, which adds protection on very windy days or in very cold water. The price varies depending on thickness and construction complexity, but at Mundo-Surf we have options in all ranges.
Advantages of a well-chosen wetsuit
A well-fitted wetsuit completely changes your performance in the water. It lets you catch more waves without getting tired, enjoy longer winter sessions, and protect your skin from cold and chafing. One thing to bear in mind is that comfort also works on a psychological level: when you’re not cold, your body relaxes and your surfing improves.
