Junior

When it comes to kids’ wetsuits, thickness is chosen according to water temperature, not brand: a 4/3 mm wetsuit covers most of the year in the Atlantic; a 3/2 mm comes into play when the water is above 19 °C. The difference between the two is not only in thermal insulation, but also in the freedom of movement in cold water that shapes each young surfer’s experience. From the age of 8, a child already needs real thermal protection, not just a thin layer.

Wetsuit thickness for kids by water temperature

For young surfers, three thicknesses cover virtually any conditions. A 3/2 mm wetsuit is the reference for waters between 19 and 21 °C; it offers adequate thermal insulation without limiting shoulder mobility. A 4/3 mm wetsuit is used below 19 °C and adds protection to the torso and limbs. A shorty or short-sleeve wetsuit in 3/2 mm works well in summer, when warmer water allows for more exposure. The first question is always: what is the water temperature in the area where the child usually surfs, before making any other decision?

Types of wetsuits for young surfers

The choice of wetsuit type depends on the season and on how much thermal protection each youngster needs. A short-sleeve shorty is ideal for spring and autumn in mild waters; it adds comfort and allows a greater range of motion in the arms. A full suit in 4/3 mm is what we recommend at Mundo-Surf when temperatures drop in winter; it covers from neck to ankles and provides maximum body heat insulation. A long-sleeve wetsuit in 3/2 mm works as a middle ground: it protects arms and torso while maintaining flexibility.

Closure system and zipper in junior wetsuits

The closure system matters more than it seems. A front-zip wetsuit makes getting in and out easier and quicker, which is critical if the child surfs in cold water and spends several hours in the sea. A zipless suit offers better protection against water flushing in during wipeouts, but takes more time to put on.

How to choose the right wetsuit size for kids

The size of a kids’ wetsuit is determined by height and weight, not just age. At 10 years old, a child might need size 10 or size 12 depending on build. A wetsuit that is too big lets water in constantly; one that is too tight restricts movement and causes chafing. At Mundo-Surf we offer specific junior sizes that respect each youngster’s proportions: checking with an advisor before buying helps avoid unnecessary returns. Most brands provide size charts by age and weight; we also offer 100 days for returns if the fit is not right.

Protection and comfort in water sports suits for young people

A well-fitted wetsuit not only protects against the cold: it also prevents chafing and lets the child enjoy more time in the water without discomfort. Lycra panels on the shoulders and back increase freedom of movement in water sports such as surfing. In the water, this translates into less fatigue and faster technical progression. For every young surfer, the decision depends on the water temperature where they usually surf and how many hours they expect to spend in it. At Mundo-Surf we have guaranteed stock in our own warehouse and expert advice so every child can find the right wetsuit with no room for doubt.
