Skateboard Wheels

Here you will find a selection of skateboard wheels. What makes the difference here is not just the brand or the price: it’s worth understanding how hardness, diameter and shape change the board’s behavior depending on the discipline.

In practice, small hard wheels usually work better in skateparks and in technical skating, where quick response and ease for tricks are key. On the other hand, larger and slightly softer wheels provide grip and comfort on rough asphalt, varied street use or cruiser-type setups.

Skateboard wheel guide: hardness, size and shape

Which skate wheels to choose for your style and discipline?

The deciding factor is how you actually use the board. The size, width and weight of the skate wheels directly affect acceleration, stability and grip.

For technical street or park skating, the usual range is 52 to 54 mm with high hardness, normally 99A or 100A. Something to keep in mind when looking for more versatility: sizes from 54 to 56 mm and hardness between 95A and 97A tend to work better for mixed use, less perfect surfaces or boards geared towards urban commuting.

If you skate bowls or wide transitions, what often sets one board apart from another in these conditions is a wheel with a bit more diameter, for example 55 to 58 mm, to maintain speed. If your goal is a cruiser or comfortable city riding, going down to 78A–90A clearly improves vibration absorption and grip.

How to clean skate wheels?

To clean the wheels of a skateboard, first you need to take them off and carefully remove the bearings. The important thing here is not to leave any moisture inside the setup.

The wheels can be cleaned with water and a cloth, while the bearings require a suitable product or specific cleaning depending on their type. After they are completely dry, it’s best to lubricate the bearings before putting everything back together.

What is the two-wheeled skate called?

The two-wheeled skate is usually known as a waveboard. It’s a board designed for movement based on twisting your body, with sensations that partly resemble surfing or snowboarding.

If there’s just one point to remember, it’s this: it doesn’t follow the same logic of choice as a classic skateboard, because its behavior and use are different from the ground up.

How to understand wheel hardness: A and B scales?

The hardness of a skate wheel is usually expressed on the A scale. On that scale, 78A corresponds to a very soft wheel and 100A to a very hard wheel.

In practice, 78A–87A is mainly suited to cruisers, filming or riding on rough ground. Between 95A and 97A you get a useful middle ground for mixed use, while 99A–101A is more oriented towards technical street, park and smooth surfaces.

There are also wheels labeled with the B scale. One thing to keep in mind when comparing both references: an 80B is roughly equivalent to a 100A in real hardness.

What wheel shape do you need: straight or beveled?

The shape of the wheel changes the contact with the ground. What makes the difference here is the contact edge: a squarer edge usually offers more contact area and grip, while a beveled edge makes it easier to get certain sensations of release and slide.

Straight-profile wheels usually work well in setups where support and control are the priority. Beveled or rounded-edge wheels feel smoother for transitions, ramps or maneuvers where you want the wheel to break free more easily.

Skate wheels at Mundo-Surf: how to find your way

At Mundo-Surf, the useful criterion for choosing is not to look for a “better” wheel in absolute terms, but to place each option according to discipline, hardness, diameter and shape. Same logic as for any skate setup: a wheel suited to technical street won’t respond the same as one designed for cruiser or bowl.

If you skate on smooth ground and prioritize tricks, you should first look at higher hardness and smaller diameters. If you ride around town, on mixed surfaces or longer commutes, it makes more sense to consider larger wheels with lower hardness to gain comfort and traction.
