Junior Poncho
Junior ponchos are a very useful item for kids who spend time at the beach, pool or around water. They make it easy to get changed, help maintain body warmth and add comfort right after coming out of the water. In practice, they’re especially handy when it’s windy, the air temperature is low, or there are several outfit changes in the same day.
Made from soft, quick-drying materials, these surf ponchos help dry the skin and prevent that cold feeling after a swim. Junior changing towels are usually made from terry cotton, technical microfiber or mixed fabrics: what really makes the difference here is the balance between absorbency, feel and drying speed. There is also a variety of colours and designs, a secondary aspect compared to actual use, but worth considering when the child is going to use it frequently.
What to consider when choosing a junior surf poncho
- Size by age and height: The deciding factor is not just age, but also the child’s height. A poncho that is too short offers less coverage when getting changed; one that is too big can make movement difficult. As a reference, it should cover at least down to mid-thigh without dragging on the ground.
- Material and drying: Microfiber usually dries faster and weighs less, which is useful at the pool, when travelling or for intensive use. Terry cotton offers a warmer feel and a greater sense of coziness, although it takes longer to dry. If there’s one key point: for daily use and mild climates, microfiber is usually the more practical choice.
- Warmth according to temperature: In mild water and warm outdoor conditions, a lightweight fabric is usually enough. However, with wind or temperatures below 20°C out of the water, a poncho with higher fabric weight, a snug hood and a loose cut to get changed without losing heat is more suitable.
- Functional details: A front pocket, well-sized hood, wide openings at the shoulders or fitted cuffs are elements that improve real-world use. What sets one poncho apart from another in these conditions is how it performs in the wind, during quick changes and when drying between sessions.
- Main activity: Occasional use at the beach is not the same as several weekly sessions of surfing, swimming or bodyboarding. For the pool and short trips, quick drying is the priority; for the beach, waiting between sessions or surf school, extra warmth is usually more important.
The right choice mainly depends on how often it will be used, the climate, and how independent the child is when getting changed. At Mundo-Surf, the most useful approach is to compare size, fabric and level of warmth rather than focusing only on the design. The same logic applies to other junior accessories: the clearer the usage context, the easier the choice.
